Description: Cell division. Colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a hepatocyte (liver cell) splitting into two new cells (cytokinesis). Here, this occurs soon after the nucleus of the old has split into two identical copies of itself by mitosis. Each new nucleus moves to an opposite end of the cell, and the central cytoplasm constricts, leaving a thin bridge. The bridge contracts under the influence of the structural protein actin, until it eventually breaks, leaving two independent cells, each identical to their parent. Hepatocytes form the fulk of the liver and amongst other things, help to clean the blood.
